VIBES RECORDS first opened its doors in 1977.
Riding the crest of the New Wave, we also published a magazine (covering both the local and national music scenes of the time) which was exclusively available from the shop. The following year we launched a record label, releasing two singles by Bury band The Reducers (which now fetch tidy sums on the collectors market) and one by mysterious songstress Fran Barrie (which unjustifiably doesn't!).
In 1985 we opened a subsidiary branch on the other side of town, naming it MUZE. Over a period of time it gradually evolved into a dance music specialist, whilst the main VIBES store continued to cater for fans of rock, blues, jazz, folk, sixties pop, Northern Soul, reggae, and other genres alongside mainstream chart-oriented music.
Impending redevelopment of the town centre's shopping precinct forced the closure of MUZE in the mid-1990s, but we decided to retain the name for the MUZE MAIL ORDER operation which became our next project in 1996, for the benefit of those unable to visit the VIBES RECORDS shop in person.
